@SpankinElroy Andy Partridge writes great songs, and most of XTC's songs. I'd say about 75%. But Moulding Writes better songs. Not all the time. About 60%-70% of his songs are crap. Experimental failures. But When he puts out a good song. Not just a good song, a gem brought from the highest mount in heaven. But this is rather infrequently. So I do suppose Andy is responsible for most of the success, but the band would never be as great as it is without Mouldings. End of story.

Thanks for the spelling lesson. Boy, is my face red! I agree with you about the "sparkle"of the 12 string. It sounded good even on the am radios and low tech phonographs of the time. It helped to nudge folk music from the clubs to the Top 40. No wonder Roger McGuinn made it his signature sound (as did Tom Petty). The Rickenbacker 12 string should be as iconic as the Hofner violin bass in the history of '60's music.

In Sweden we had women making 75-80% of men during the 70's. Controlling for differences in different positions of job they made 98.6%. There never was wage discrimination of women. Condsider if 20% was seen in favour of women controlling for differences between jobs, what would be seen if controlling for differences _within_ a job too. Such as male police doing the risky task whereas the female police just frisks other woman, all else equal. There is nowtoday wage discrimination against men!

I think theyre stable at 9% of non governmental employees, and have been for a while. Unions were repeatedly broken by government and private power for a hundred years, what do you expect? I would say workers reject unions because theyre imperfect. But you probably wouldnt get rid of all government because it's flawed, would you?

Unions are in decline because the rich (ie Republicans) have done a very effective job in convincing the poor that the effect of unions is to make the products produced by union workers expensive. Nevermind the fact that, in practice, this actually does happen because the people at the top won't stand a drop from making $2M a year to making $ 1.8M a year... unions ARE positive because they give workers the stability necessary to let them spend their money and drive the economy.

First off it's not garnishing wages. She has auto-deposit. so her pay goes stright to her accout. Stop the auto-deposit and use money orders and they can't take nothing from her. Problem solved. now if she is going to use a credit card she never planned on paying in the first place, she should have it taken stright out of her pay check. tell you right now it's not fair as it is UNSECURED debt, but I don't know what attempt she made with Capital One. I made arrangements with them and had no problems. I made arrangements with RBC and didn't pay them for 2 years. Seriously, $0, 2 years. I'm with you on that -- but verse 4 wasn't 'added in' -- it's in the original song. Just seems most covers of it leave this verse out. And I'm guessing it's because the way it sounds in all the recordings I've heard that include it, are hard to make any sense of. This one (David's) finally makes perfect sense. Namely, the 2nd line usually comes up as, "For the mem'ries are what we have them for." Like, huh?? Other covers: Nanci Griffith; Chesapeake (Mike Auldridge's successor to Seldom Scene).

I just caught Dave two weeks ago, and he did this song (one of my faves from Ian Tyson!).\ I especially like the verse he adds in, "Ah, she's a woman so fine I might never try to find her, for good memories of what we had before should never be changed, for they're all that I'll take with me." He 'got to me' with that line/verse, since I can "relate" with my current situation. GREAT song!! I love ALL versions, even though Dave's is a little more 'soulful' than Ian's smoother one.

Yes and no. For most of the 19th century roads were privately constructed. Also, roads are paid for in the US by gasoline tax. If you don't use the product, you don't pay the tax. In my opinion automation has a lot to answer for. Automation is typically used to replace the skilled workers, not the unskilled workers. In many industries it is the "decent work" that is lost to automation, wheras the lowest paid jobs will likely never be automated or will just evolve into similar unskilled repetative work. If I make 30,000 a year 3 years ago and could barely afford gas, food, amenities, etc. then what happens when gas doubles, food cost rises 30 percent, and health care cost go up as well. I choose not to go shopping. When you starve the middle class, you starve the market for every employer. Yep, and it's always the sudden stop at the end that causes the most damage. Regardless of what any one thinks or does, I have been moving to more solid forms of money to help ensure my survival. If it doesn't happen, awesome... but if it does, hopefully the sudden stop will have a lessened effect on me and my family. The more we take this direction, the smarter the founding fathers seem.

I'm assuming "you" meant "the country". Typically it works VERY well. Except when the economy tanks like this and our government and big banks literally thieve our money right from under our noses. Ironically, if we didn't HAVE these entitlement programs, our country would have A LOT more money on hand. Gold didn't fail, government ran up deficits that the gold standard didn't allow them to inflate away, they were about to collapse when they did the Bretton Woods system in 1971 which was essentially the US Government defaulting on their debt. Gold didn't fail as money, the US Government failed to pay back their debts. Not surprising, history always shows that governments default on their debts.
